MALO

Through this interpretation of the traditional malo we're able to wear a daily historical garment in modern day society feeling closer to our ancestors wherever we navigate. What's the malo? The malo was a fundamental article of traditional Hawaiian attire for men. Worn as a loincloth, it typically comprised kapa cloth, a fabric derived from the paper mulberry tree. While kapa was the preferred material, other substances were also employed. Adorned with intricate designs often imbued with cultural significance, the malo served not only as clothing but as a symbolic representation of Hawaiian identity. Its use extended across diverse facets of Hawaiian life, from daily activities to ceremonial occasions. Today, the malo endures as a revered vestige of Hawaii's rich cultural tapestry, often seen at cultural events and celebrations.

ALI’I’S ATLAS • Archival Clothing

The legacy of King Kalākaua, the last reigning monarch of Hawaiʻi, serves as the foundational inspiration for this collection. His pioneering 1881 world tour, a testament to his visionary leadership, transcended diplomatic protocol to become a cultural and technological touchstone. As the first reigning monarch to circumnavigate the globe and visit the White House, Kalākaua emerged as a global figurehead, embodying a spirit of innovation that culminated in ʻIolani Palace becoming the world's first electrically illuminated building. Much like the archival records that underpin the structure of governance, Kalākaua's reign stands as a historical cornerstone, a testament to the enduring power of leadership and the pursuit of progress. That’s why ‘archival clothing’ (copyright pending) founded by the ECOH was created so you can back the statement of your existence.
