ALI’I’S ATLAS • Archival Clothing

The legacy of King Kalākaua, the last reigning monarch of Hawaiʻi, serves as the foundational inspiration for this collection. His pioneering 1881 world tour, a testament to his visionary leadership, transcended diplomatic protocol to become a cultural and technological touchstone. As the first reigning monarch to circumnavigate the globe and visit the White House, Kalākaua emerged as a global figurehead, embodying a spirit of innovation that culminated in ʻIolani Palace becoming the world's first electrically illuminated building. Much like the archival records that underpin the structure of governance, Kalākaua's reign stands as a historical cornerstone, a testament to the enduring power of leadership and the pursuit of progress. That’s why ‘archival clothing’ (copyright pending) founded by the ECOH was created so you can back the statement of your existence.

HĀHĀLAU • Manta Ray

While ancient Hawaiians primarily focused on nearshore resources, the majestic manta ray has captured modern hearts. These gentle giants, known for their unique spot patterns similar to the uniqueness of a human fingerprint, are identifiable individuals thanks to dedicated research. Hawaii, particularly the island of Hawaii (nicknamed Big Island), is a global hotspot for manta ray encounters, offering unparalleled opportunities to witness their graceful underwater ballet. This pattern was hand-drawn to replicate the patterns found on Hawaiian manta rays, representing the feeling of flying just inches above the sand. Our pattern maker, Jane Galluzzi, a US National and Hawaii State Water Polo Champion while attending Punahou, shared that she would take breaks by swimming inches above the bottom of the pool, mimicking a manta ray to find inspiration and solace before games, often thinking of her father, Henry Meyer, taking her to Maui Stingray baseball games as a keiki (child).
